When God takes something of this world from us the
reason we are troubled is because we set our fleshly hearts too much on this
world. The frowns of the world would not hurt us, if we did not covet its
smiles. Believer, this world is not our
home. We have a home eternal in the heavens
(2 Cor 4: 17-5:1)

Why do you fear where you never ought to have
hoped? Instead of fearing that you cannot hold on, despair of holding on

anvil is struck by the hammer and the anvil never strikes in return and yet the

“Be merciful unto me, O God, be
merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings
will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast” (Ps 57:1). Our calamities are matters of time but our refuge in
Christ is a matter of eternity.

PERFECT PERFORMANCE
"I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things
for me" (Psalm 57:2). Our Saviour performed all things
for us. Our sin has been all put away. The righteousness with which we are
clothed is complete. All that God's infinite justice can demand of us has been
performed for us by our Substitute. Our warfare is accomplished. Our sin is
pardoned. There is not one thing for us to do to complete the work of Christ.
This word performeth means perfecteth. "I will cry unto God most high,
unto God who perfecteth all things concerning me." David is confident that
what God has said will come to pass. He is so sure of God's purpose, that while
he is fleeing for his life, he praises and blesses God that He is perfecting
that which concerns him and leading him by a sure path to the throne. The Lord
God of Heaven is working every detail for our good and for His glory. No wonder
he could say, "I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all
things for me."

AMONG LIONS
Psalm 57: 4 My
soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons
of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
The ungodly watch the righteous and if they can catch
them in their speech, or if they can make them angry and cause them to speak an
unguarded word, how eagerly they pounce upon him! They magnify his fault, put
it under a microscope of 10,000 power and make a great thing of it. “Report it!
Report it!” they say. “So would we have it!” Anything against a true-born child
of God is a sweet nut for them! Such as are daily watched, daily carped at,
daily abused, daily hindered in everything that is good and gracious—go with
your tears before the God you serve and cry to Him, “My soul is among lions.” Charles Spurgeon

THE TRIAL OF THE WORD
Psalm 105: 19: Until the time that his word came: the word
of the Lord tried him.
While in prison Joseph interpreted the butler’s
dream. In return, Joseph asked that the
butler remember him to Pharaoh to bring him out of prison (Gen 40:14,23). But it was two long years before God made the
butler remember (Gen 41:9). What was God doing for Joseph by causing him to wait
two years in prison? “Until the time that his word came: the word of the
Lord tried him.”
God promised
Joseph that God would exalt Joseph and his brethren would bow to him. But while Joseph was in prison it did not
appear the Lord’s word would come. In eternity,
God entered covenant with Christ promising to exalt him and bring all his redeemed
to bow before him. But when Christ hung
upon the cursed tree forsaken of God for his people it did not appear the Lord’s
word would come to pass. Though tried by
that word, our Redeemer never ceased trusting the Father. He said, “I gave my
back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not
my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall
I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that
I shall not be ashamed” (Is 50: 6-7).
Believer has
God brought you into a bitter trial? We
have God’s word that Christ our Righteousness shall save us. “But until the time that his word comes [to
pass]: the word of the Lord [tries] us.” (Ps 105: 19) But if we are Christ’s
then by Gods’ grace we shall wait until God’s word comes. The same as God brought his word to pass for
Joseph, God is bringing his word to Christ to pass. He is bringing each
redeemed sinner to bow to Christ that his Son might be the firstborn among many
brethren. Therefore, for the sake of
Christ, be assured that not one covenant word God has made to us shall go unfulfilled.
Let us wait, looking to Christ, until
the time that his word comes! “The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in
him. The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that
seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and
quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.” (Lam 3:24-26)
