SUNDAY’S READING IN PROVERBS

Proverbs 8: 12: I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. 13: The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. 14: Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. 15: By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. 16: By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. 17: I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. 18: Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. 19: My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. 20: I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: 21: That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.

?-----------------------------?

If you were sailing across the sea on a ship and had very little money yet you knew when you get to the other side you will inherit the largest fortune the world has ever known would you be content though you had very little while on your trip across the sea? While on this pilgrimage the believer may possess very little. But we have a rich inheritance to come.  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Rom 8: 16-18)

DRAWN TO CHRIST
By Eric Lutter

“Who hath ears to hear, let him hear” (Matthew 13:9)

Like the parables, the gospel divides those hearing it (Hebrews 4:12). Many do not understand what they are hearing (John 10:6). Others hear and go away being offended (John 6:60-66). Still others hate what they have heard and would destroy God himself if they could (Luke 20:19). Our Lord himself sent multitudes away.  But notice the blessed effect Christ’s word has on his true disciples. His disciples “came unto him” that they might learn what his word means (Matthew 13:36). If the gospel draws you to Christ, you have only God to thank for that. “Blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear” (Matthew 13:16).

THE BELIEVER’S TREASURE

By Pastor Tommy Robbins

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 2 Corinthians 4:7

By God’s grace, the child of God is different than those who do not know Christ. Every person is an earthen vessel, but the believer has a treasure, which the unbeliever does not have. This makes the difference. God has given his people this treasure that he may receive the glory, and not us. This treasure is a gift of God to poor sinners who are undeserving and powerless. From this text, let us consider a threefold treasure which comprises the whole of the believer’s life in this world.

The first, without which there would be nothing else, is CHRIST. The Lord Jesus Christ is the greatest treasure that one could have. Everything else is but dung compared to Him. To have Christ is to have everything. ”But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption” (1 Cor 1:30). One could have all of this worlds goods, but without Christ all would be nothing—“Christ is all, and in all” (Col 3:11).

Second, the believer’s great treasure in this world is the Gospel OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. The Gospel is the record that God has given to his people concerning his Son and their redemption in Him. The Gospel is the revelation of Jesus Christ, the living Word of God. The child of God treasures the Gospel more than anything in the world because it speaks of him who is altogether lovely. The one who has the Gospel has the greatest of treasures and would dare to die than part with it. The desire and treasure of the believing heart is to HEAR THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST PROCLAIMED.

Third, to the believer, THE PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL is the great joy and rejoicing of his heart. To hear the truth of our Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed is a treasure from God, without which the believing sinner cannot live. Those who can live in this world without consistently hearing the preaching of the Gospel live in this world without Christ. “He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God” (Jn 8:47). We have this treasure because God, in his sovereign grace, is pleased that we have it. The excellency of the power of God is Christ, and he is revealed in the preaching of the Gospel to chosen earthen vessels, which is “the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Rom 1:16).

LEARN FROM CAIN
By Cody Henson

“And Cain talked with Abel his brother” – Genesis 4:8

How that person despises the message of grace who trusts in their own works! What anger fills one’s heart when they hear that God will not accept their sacrifices! So much anger that, like Cain, we would kill our own brother! Sinner, be swift to learn the lesson here. God will not accept anything we offer Him other than that which He has already offered Himself: Jesus Christ and Him crucified. If we have to contribute something as much as a decision to believe, God will not accept us. Learn from Cain.  Cody Henson

THE WHOLE BODY FITLY JOINED TOGETHER

Ephesians 4: 16: From [Christ] the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

In our physical body one member receives nourishment through another member because all the members are joined together. Severe a member from the body and it does not get the nutrients it needs and it dies. And the whole body suffers because of it.

So it is in Christ’s church. Our risen Lord Jesus fitly joins together each member in his body.  We cannot fitly join ourselves together in Christ’s body nor can we do so for anyone else.  But Christ can and does join together all his blood-bought saints in the body as it pleases him. If someone is not fitly joined together it is because Christ has not united them together with his people.  But Christ effectually compacts his regenerated people together in the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Having joined us together, Christ effectually works in each member to make each believer minister to every other member in the body. When he speaks of the body “edifying itself in love” it is because as each one of us receives grace from Christ, it is not only to edify us personally, but Christ uses each member to also edify other members in the body. What a great privilege! What a great responsibility!  We desperately need each other because we need Christ and his gospel most of all! This is our motive to always be “endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace!”

LEARN CHRIST

Ephesians 4: 20: But ye have not so learned Christ; 21: If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

Some may be hesitant to confess faith in Christ because they imagine they have not learned enough doctrine so as to speak of Christ as they would like.  Others may imagine they have confessed faith in Christ when in reality they have only learned doctrine.  Nowhere does scripture say we are saved by learning doctrine, even if it be true doctrine.  Salvation is not in what we have learned but WHO!

Salvation is learning Christ. It is to hear him, and to be taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus.  We have learned someone when we know them! If we would know the true God, learn Christ.  If we would be saved, learn Christ. If we would know all gospel truth, learn Christ. If we would know the way we are to walk in this life, learn Christ.  The truth is in the Lord Jesus Christ!
