The experience of salvation is the reception of the promise of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised and gave his elect in Christ before the world began (2 Tim. 1:10; Heb. 9:14-17). Don Fortner, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Danville, KY

A ROOT OUT OF A DRY GROUND

Isaiah 53: 2: For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

There is a double metaphor in this verse.  First, the metaphor compares Christ to a tender plant, a root. Secondly, there is a metaphor comparing the house of David, as well as all sinners, to “dry ground.”

Christ is the Root and all sinners, including God’s elect, are dry ground. We give nothing to Christ the Root but Christ the Root gives all to his people.  (Ro 11: 17-18; Rev 22: 16; Jn 15: 4-5)

“Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”          (1 Peter 1:5)

By nothing less than the power of God through faith shall a regenerated sinner be found kept from eternally perishing. God graciously and powerfully grants faith to those He has everlastingly purposed to save. He, who never leaves or forsakes His own, keeps them in the faith and only by His power can they be said to be ready or prepared to be revealed or exposed as the recipients of His grace in the last time.  Marvin Stalnaker, pastor of Katy Baptist Church, Fairmont, WV

NO EXCEPTIONS!

My English teacher in college, when speaking to us about the rules of grammar, would often say, “Now to some of these rules there are exceptions.”  Let me give you two rules which are absolutely without exception.

Rule number one:  Every sin shall receive its just penalty and payment, and the wages of sin is death, the second death, eternal death and Hell! (Heb. 2:2; Rom. 6:23).  The Holy God of the Bible, that God with whom we have to do, not only will not but cannot clear the guilty (Ex. 34:7).  He is infinitely and unchangeably holy and just.  All sin shall   be punished, justly punished.  NO EXCEPTIONS!

Rule number two: No sinner for whom the Lord Jesus lived, suffered and died as Substitute and Surety, will ever suffer at the hands of God, any penalty, for any sin!  Justice God does demand, and justice God will have!  “But justice God cannot twice demand, first at the bleeding Surety’s hand; then again at mine!”  NO EXCEPTIONS!

Dear sinner, there is, right now, “no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 8:1).  In Christ Jesus, through faith in Him, there is full, free, perfect, and everlasting salvation.  Any sinner who has Christ, has God’s Salvation!  No sinner ever sought Him sincerely, in truth, and sought in vain.  He delights to save sinners.  He came into this world to save sinners.  He suffered and died under the wrath of God to save sinners.  He lives and reigns to save sinners.  He is going to save some sinners.  He is fully able to save you.  Do you need Him?  Do you believe Him?  “He that believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:16; John 3:36).  Maurice Montgomery, pastor-emeritus Bible Baptist Church, Madisonville, KY

BLESSED IS THE PREACHER ...

Blessed is the preacher who can shut men up to free and sovereign grace and yet lovingly, sincerely invite all men to look to Christ and be saved.

Blessed is the preacher who knows that “salvation is of the Lord,” who has the patience to wait upon the Lord to regenerate, awaken, and call his hearers; yet he prays for their deliverance, urges them to close with Christ, and beseeches them to “be reconciled to God.”

Blessed is the preacher who can preach with equal force and confidence both the preservation and the perseverance of believers. He will not turn away from us and we will not depart from Him.

Blessed is the preacher who can rejoice in imputed righteousness: “with His holy garments on, I am as spotless as His dear Son;” and yet, along with his congregation, hunger and thirst for spiritual growth and personal godliness.

Blessed is the preacher who can find and preach both justification and sanctification at Calvary. We do not go to Calvary for justification and then to Sinai for sanctification; we are “complete in Him.”

Blessed is the preacher who can preach prophetical truth in such a way that his hearers are looking for the returning Christ and not only the return of Christ.

Blessed is the preacher who administers believers’ baptism, presides at the Lord’s table, and oversees the business of the Lord’s church. not according to the “way we do it in our circles and according to our custom and tradition,” but according to the Word of God.

It may be that if preachers and people return to the Scriptures, someone will ask, “What kind of church is this?” And we can answer, “It is the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, which He loved and purchased with His own blood and of which He is the sole Head.”–Henry T. Mahan, minister in Rocky Mount, Virginia, USA
