In the beginning of my experience in the things of God,…I had this truth impressed upon my conscience, as I have reason to believe, very powerfully and very distinctly, by the finger of God—that I could know nothing, but by divine teaching; have nothing, but by divine giving; and be nothing, but by divine making.  JC Philpot

I find it interesting how people deny God's sovereignty when it comes to salvation, but when a great trial comes their way, they go into desperation mode and cry, "God is in control, everything will be okay!" If God is in control during your difficulties, rest assured He is in control of salvation, from start to finish. Either God is in control of all, or He is in control of nothing at all. Which is it? God’s servants are not men who serve themselves by the people of God, but men who serve the people of God by the sacrifice of themselves, gladly devoting their lives to the cause of Christ.

GOD’S GREAT LOVE

Ephesians 2:4: But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5: Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

God saves his people because of his great love wherewith he loved us. The “us” that God loved are those God has made saints and gave faith in Christ. (Eph 1: 1)  They are those God loved from before the foundation of the world. (Eph 1: 3-6) For his great love wherewith he loved us, God counseled with himself and entered covenant with himself concerning how each person in the Godhead would accomplish all the particulars of our salvation according to God’s eternal purpose in Christ. (Eph 1: 11)

Those God loved are those who were born dead in sins. (Eph 2: 5) Yet, for his great love wherewith he loved us, God quickened us together with Christ by his grace.  We walked according to the course of this world but God quickened us together with Christ. The power of the prince of the air ruled over us but for his great love wherewith he loved us God quickened us together with Christ. We walked in the lusts of our flesh and were by nature the children of wrath even as others but God, for his great love wherewith he loved us, gave us a new spirit making us partaker of the divine nature. All we were by nature was sinners but God who is rich in mercy loved us with his great love.

Will God’s great love ever change toward us? Never! “The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” (Jer 31: 3) The love of God toward his people is from everlasting. It is unchangeable. God’s love never changes from love to wrath. He never casts one into hell that he everlastingly loves.

Oh, thank God for his great love wherewith he loved us.

1 Corinthians 2: 12: Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

HOW MUCH LONGER?

When I was a small boy and my family went on vacation, if I asked once, I asked a thousand times, “How much longer?” My father was a very patient man. He had to be for me to still be alive. Every ten or twenty minutes, if that long, came the question again, “How much longer?” In this microwave society in which we live today, this has become a common question. People are in a hurry. Most want it right NOW! Folks don’t like standing in line. They don’t like holding on the phone. It seems as though no one likes waiting for anything! We often ask, “How much longer?” Aren’t you glad our heavenly Father is not that way? He is so longsuffering and patient. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any (elect, chosen child of His) should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Pet. 3:9) Child of God, aren’t you glad God was, is and will always be patient and longsuffering with you?        David Eddmenson

TO BE ABSENT FROM THE BODY

“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” (II Cor. 5:8).

A believer is so confident of Christ our Savior, that he is very willing to leave this world.  We do not look forward to the process of the death of the body, but we do long to go be with our Lord.  A believer has been born again into a new citizenship in glory and our new heart looks forward to going home to be with our Savior.

When a child of God dies, we who are left behind mourn the loss of companionship and friendship.  However, we rejoice to know that the very moment a child of God closed his eyes in death, he opened them in glory, looking into the face of our Lord Jesus Christ! (Luke 23:43).

That is why we can say that the day a believer dies is the best day of his life.  The day of the death of a believer is far better than the day of his birth (Eccl. 7:1), because that is the day we finally see our Savior face to face.  Frank Tate
