Genesis 21: 2:
For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of
which God had spoken to him. 3: And Abraham called the name of his son that was
born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
Isaac is a type of
Christ. (Gal 3:16)
That is not by accident but according to the purpose of God. Here are some ways
Isaac is a type of Christ.
Both births were
announced years before. (Gen 21: 1-3;
Gen 3: 15)
Each births occurred at the time set by God. (Gen 21: 2;
Gal 4: 4)
Both were named before their birth: of Isaac read Genesis 17:19;
of Christ, “And she shall bring forth a
son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from
their sins.” (Mt 1: 21) Each birth was a miracle of God. (Gen 21: 7; Lu 1: 35)
From both, God promised seed would be born: of Isaac, “for in Isaac shall thy
seed be called.” (Gen 21: 12; Rom 9: 6-9);
Christ is the Seed born through Isaac; we are told that the promise made to
Abraham was also made to Christ concerning the regeneration of all Christ’s
redeemed (Gal 3: 16) and that the very reason Christ was made a curse
for his people was so this blessing would come upon all Christ’s seed among all
nations, that each shall be called to life, “Christ hath redeemed us from the
curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every
one that hangeth on a tree: THAT the blessing of Abraham might come on the
Gentiles through Jesus Christ; THAT we might receive the promise of the Spirit
through faith.” (Gal 3: 13-14) Both were offered of their Father as a
sacrifice: of Isaac, “And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom
thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a
burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.” (Gen 22: 2);
of Christ, “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God
sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.” (1 Jn 4: 9)
Both bore the wood on which they were offered: of Isaac, “And Abraham took the
wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son.” (Gen 22: 6);
of Christ, “And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place
of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha.” (Jn 19: 17)
Each freely submitted. (Gen 22: 9; Jn 10: 17-18) With both God provided himself a lamb: with
Isaac, God provided himself a lamb to take Isaac’s place (Gen 22: 8);
Christ is God providing himself to be the Lamb who took the place of, and put
away the sins of, his people. (Jn 1: 36;
Heb 1: 3)
The purpose of God in
making Isaac a type of Christ is to show us that God does all things according
to the word of his promise on purpose for the purpose of glorifying himself in
the person of his only begotten Son—“as
he had said, as he has spoken.” Believe God. “God is
not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent:
hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he
not make it good?” (Nu 23: 19)
